What is NAT Type on PS5?
NAT is a service that lets personal or Private IP addresses connect to a cloud or a service. For example, a Personal Computer connecting to any streaming service. Network Address Translation or, simply, NAT type is used when more than one IP address is translated into a global IP address. By default, there are three NAT types; Static, Dynamic, and Port Address Translations. But in the case of the PS5 console, you have three NAT Types Open, Moderate, and Strict.
Change NAT Type on PS5
If the NAT type on your PS5 is strict, you will be facing issues with joining online servers, finding matches or even playing with your friends. Because your PlayStation 5 is used as a gaming device to play online games, it is recommended that the NAT type on your PS5 is set to Open type (Type 1). Here is how you can change it.
Check NAT Type on Your PlayStation 5
First you need to check what NAT type us selected on your PS5. Whether it need to be changed or some other thing is the reason for the issue. Here are the steps that you can follow to see what NAT Type is on your PS5.
- Switch on your PS5 and grab the controller.
- Now, navigate to Settings, followed by Network.
- With the Network page open, select View Connection Status.
- You should see the NAT Type displayed. If your NAT type is displayed as Type 1 then everything is fine.
However, if your NAT type displayed is either Type 2 or Type 3, it is time to tinker around with the settings of your router.
Adjust Your Router’s Port Settings
For this, you need to either use your smartphone or PC and be connected to the router’s Wi-Fi network.
- Launch the web browser of your choice and go over to the router login page for your particular router.
- You should see this address or link presented at the back of your router or in the router’s manual. It is usually 192.168.1.1. If you don’t know username and password, you can contact your ISP for details.
- Once you have entered your router’s settings page, look for the Port triggering, port forwarding, or virtual server. The option will vary by router you are using. For example, in my router settings, I have direct option to choose NAT Type under Network Settings > NAT configuration.
- If your router has port forwarding or port triggering, open it and make sure to set the following port numbers for TCP and UDP. You will need your PS5 IP address to specify you are making changes for this device.
- TCP: 80, 443, 465, 993, 3478, 3479, 3480
- UDP: 2074, 3478, 3479
- Now, once these changes are done, save the settings and reboot your router.
- Go back to your PS5 and check the network status. Your NAT Type should now be displayed as Type 1.
Note: If you can't find port forwarding, find out your router model number, go to Google, search 'your router name followed by NAT type settings or bridge settings'. You can also contact your Internet provider and ask for their help.
If you are not able to use Internet on more than one device after selecting NAT Type 1, you can switch it to Type 2. Type 2 NAT also works great on most games.
What each NAT Type means on PS5
There are NAT Type 1, NAT Type 2, and NAT Type 3. Each NAT Type is different and should be used based on the need. NAT Type 1 or Open NAT is the most recommended NAT when it comes to gaming. Your console and your PCs should be set to NAT Type 1. It helps you to connect quickly to the game’s servers. Meanwhile the Moderate NAT Type, or NAT Type 2 means some restrictions indicating that the particular device is now sitting behind a firewall.
The third and final NAT, i.e., NAT Type 3 or Strict NAT is perfect for networks that deal with sensitive and important data. Using this type of NAT helps you get the highest level of security and helps prevent any cyber-attacks or even DDoS attacks. While it seems like a good and secure NAT, this is not recommended to be used by gamers.
This concludes the guide on how you can change the NAT Type on your PS5. Changing the NAT type can help you solve a lot of issues related to multiplayer games, such as server searching or joining matches with your friends. Now that you know what to do in case you have issues with online games on your PS5, you can easily resolve it within just a few minutes.
