Is your Spectrum router experiencing connectivity issues, and in worse case scenarios, experiencing slower speeds than what was offered in your plan? Many users have reported such problems with the spectrum WiFi. While in most cases usually its due to the network provider faults, there are times where the router could be the cause of such problems.
Now, these issues will occur for users who might be living in apartments, especially if there are many Wi-Fi routers nearby. Since Wi-Fi routers transmit data wirelessly to your devices via various spectrum bands, multiple routers transmitting data on the same Wi-Fi band can result in issues with internet stability and Wi-Fi network range.
In today’s guide, we will share how to change the Wi-Fi channels on your Spectrum router to fix such issues.
Change the Channel on a Spectrum Router
Before we discuss how to change the Wi-Fi channels on your Spectrum router, let’s first see how to find the best Wi-Fi channel for your router.
Pick The Best Wi-Fi Channel
Most modern routers out there have support for 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and even 6 GHz Wi-Fi bands. These Wi-Fi bands have different wireless ranges, different speed capabilities, and varying degrees of congestion.
Features | 2.4 GHz Band | 5 GHz band | 6 GHz Band |
Range | Long | Short | Shortest |
Congestion | Highest | Moderate | Lowest |
Speed | Good | Fast | Fastest |
Now by default, a lot of users leave a lot of the settings to factory default and a ton of routers end up transmitting data on the 2.4 GHz band. Now, some users will have data transmitted on the 2.4GHz as well s the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. This is possible only if you have a router that supports multiple Wi-Fi bands.

If you have a large apartment, with many rooms and want Wi-Fi coverage everywhere, then the 2.4GHz band is your best choice. But, if you have a small apartment or use Wi-Fi in just one or two rooms, either the 5GHz or the 6GHz Wi-Fi bands are perfect.
Before picking the best Wi-Fi channel, let’s take a look at how you can use a smartphone app to analyze nearby Wi-Fi networks and see what channels they use. It is recommended that you use an Android-powered smartphone to install and use any Wi-Fi analyzer app.
When you launch your Wi-Fi analyzer app, you can take a look at the Wi-Fi networks around you to see what channels different networks are using. If you see many WiFi networks using a particular channel, it simply means you need to avoid that channel as it is the most crowded one.

Depending on the type of router that you use, you can pick either of these channels as long as they are being used the least by other routers surrounding your apartment.
Change Spectrum Wi-Fi Channel to 2.4 or 5GHz
Now, follow these steps to change the Wi-Fi channel on your Spectrum-provided internet router. The steps for new Wi-Fi routers could be different.
- Connect your smartphone or PC to the Wi-Fi network broadcasted by the Spectrum router.
- Launch the web browser on your device and type in 192.168.0.1
- You will be asked to enter a username and password. These details are usually present at the back or the bottom of your router. Default username is ‘admin’ and default password is ‘password.’
- Once you’ve signed in, click on the Advanced > Network > Wireless > Basic Tab. Or if your router has a search function, simply type in the Wi-Fi channel and change the channel (2.4GHz or 5GHz) of the network band you use.
- Once changed, click on the Save or Apply button to confirm the changes.
- Log out of the router page and open the Wi-Fi analyzer app.
- You will be able to see your Spectrum router now broadcasting data on a different channel.

The above process may not work for newer routers, so make sure to check the steps below.
- Go to Spectrum login page and enter your spectrum account details to login.
- Under Your Services page, select Internet.
- Now locate and select Setup Smart Device (2.4 GHz) and then choose Switch to 2.4 GHz.
This will let you connect accessories that support 2.4GHz band.
Select 2.4GHz or 5Ghz channel with Spectrum App
Newer Spectrum routers do not allow switching to 2.4Ghz using the above methods. If this is the case with your router, then you can use the Spectrum app to change the channel of your Spectrum Wi-Fi.

First, install the My Spectrum App on your Android or iOS device. Then login with your spectrum details. Go to the Services tab > Advanced settings.
Here you will get the option to change various settings including the WiFi channel.
Closing Thoughts
This concludes the guide on how you can change the channel on your spectrum router. You can follow this guide to change the Wi-Fi channel on almost any router out there.
When you switch the channels on your Wi-Fi router to less crowded ones, you should be able to get a stable network connection and even speed that have been advertised by your internet service provider. As long as there is no issue at the backend of your ISP, you should now have good and stable Wi-Fi connections with no problems.
