If you have watched the annual developer conference, Google I/O 2024, you might be aware that Google has rolled out the AI Overviews feature for a wider audience in the US. While Google claims it will improve users’ search experience, most users don’t agree with that and want to turn it off. If you are also one of those, read on to check out the steps to turn off AI Overviews from Google Search.
Unfortunately, Google has not provided any option to turn off AI Overviews in its settings, but that does not mean you can’t disable them. There are some workarounds through which you can turn it off on your computer.
However, at the moment, neither of these workaround methods works for Chrome on Android or iOS. But you can use browsers like Firefox to disable AI Overviews from Google Search by using one of the methods we are using for PCs.
How to Turn Off AI Overviews with Google Search’s Web Filter
Since the AI Overviews are integrated into the default search results page, you can’t go away from seeing them on the main search page. Instead, you can choose to just see a search results page with web links, which was introduced in I/O 2024.
After searching for something in the browser, just select the Web tab under More, and you will get a search results page with no AI-written summary of Google’s findings. You can also make a shortcut for it by following the simple steps:
Step 1: Open the Google Chrome browser on your PC.
Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon at the top and select Settings.
Step 3: From the sidebar, choose Search engine, then tap Manage search engines and site search. Alternatively, directly type chrome://settings/searchEngines in the address bar of the browser and hit enter.
Step 4: In the next window, you will see a list of search engines. Tap on the Add button next to Site Search.

Step 5: Type “Google (Web)” under Name, “google” under Shortcut, and enter “{google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s” under URL with %s in place of the query field. Finally, tap the Save button.

Step 6: After that, tap the three-dot icon and choose Make default.

Done! Now, you will landed to the Web filter search results automatically whenever you search for something.
How to Turn Off AI Overview from Google Search Using a Chrome Extension
Instead of creating a shortcut, you can also use a Google Chrome extension on your browser to remove AI Overviews from search results. Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Install the Hide Google AI Overviews extension on your browser.

Step 2: Now, enable the extension by tapping the extension icon, then selecting the extension.
Step 3: Once done, perform a search query, and you will not see the AI Overviews.
How to Turn Off AI Overview from Google Search on Android or iOS
As mentioned earlier, you can’t use extensions and can’t add string URLs on Chrome for Android or iOS. However, you can add the string query in the Firefox browser. Just install the browser if you don’t already have.
Navigate to Firefox Settings > Search > Default search engine > Add search engine.
Next, fill out “google.com/search?udm=14&q=%s” under Search string URL and other details, then Save it.
Finally, select it from the menu, and then you will not get AI Overviews.
Wrapping Up
So, these are the workarounds through which you can disable AI Overviews from Google Search. In addition to the above methods, you can also switch to a different browser, like DuckDuckGo, if you are looking for a privacy-focused search engine.
