Always on Display is a must-have feature for aesthetic appeal. Phones with AMOLED or OLED displays are capable of showing information in a minimalist format when the device is in sleep mode; this is called AOD. The AOD feature not only enhances device appearance, it also gives easy access to time, battery level, date, etc., without waking up the phone.
If your Android phone supports AOD but lacks AOD customization or has only a few styles to apply, by following this guide, you can add more designs and customize Always on Display on your Android phone.
If you are concerned about battery life with AOD feature, you should know that its impact on battery life is minimal. In AOD, majority portion is black, and pixels that show black are turned off. Only pixels that display essential information such as date and time are active.
Now that the main query is cleared up, let’s delve into the guide.
Customize Always-on Display Styles on Android
The availability of different AOD styles differs across OS and UI. Some devices not even give the option to choose what type of AOD style you want to show, while some phones include limited pre-made styles to choose from. However, it’s possible to customize Always-on Display styles through third party apps.
In this guide, we will be using an app called Muviz Edge (Always On: Edge Music). However, you can use any popular app that you find intriguing. To find apps, simply search for AOD Styles in the Play Store, and look through the results.
- When you open the app for the first time, it will ask for permission. Grant permissions that are necessary.
- If you are using Muviz Edge switch to the AOD tab.
- Here you will find a bunch of cool AOD styles. Browse and look for a good style.
- Tap on the Style you like.
- You can now edit the style or directly apply it without any changes. You can edit following items:
- Music Controls – How long you want to show Music Bar
- Background – Keep it default
- Notifications – Show/Hide Notifications, Notification Preview
- Calendar and Battery
- Clock Weight – Light, Thin, Regular, Bold
- Clock Size
- Theme Color – Hour/Minute color, Date color, Notification color, Battery color
- Tap on the Apply button.
- Now lock your phone and wait for the AOD to trigger.

To avoid overlapping with your default Always-On Display, make sure to disable AOD in your phone settings. If turning off Always-on Display in settings doesn’t show Muviz’s AOD, then you need to enable it back.
On my Galaxy phone, the Muviz’s AOD was displaying even when I turned off the default AOD from device Settings.
Control AOD timing: If you want to show AOD only for specific duration or all the time, you can do that by going to the app’s settings > Always On Display > choose AOD Timeout.
Optimize AOD for Best Battery Life:
You need to know that colorful pixels take more battery than white color pixels. So make sure to use a AOD style that has white font color. However, you will not notice much difference in battery life even if you use a colored AOD style.
